Sundial Solar & Lunar Time

Sunrise sunset widget alarm

Features & Capabilities

Sundial Solar & Lunar Time is a comprehensive sun-and-moon tracker for iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. It places vital solar and lunar data in your hand with home, lock screen, and standby widgets and a Watch app with hundreds of complications. Create alerts for 24 solar and lunar events—sunrise, sunset, dawn, dusk, moonrise, moonset, moon phases, and civil/nautical/astronomical twilights—and customize reminders to minutes, hours, or days in advance. The 24-hour time travel wheel lets you forecast sun and moon positions for today, tomorrow, or any date.

Sundial also includes a robust widget ecosystem—35 configurable widgets for iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch—and accessibility with VoiceOver support. The app emphasizes privacy: it does not collect location data. Sundial Extras offer unlimited alerts, travel, and multi-location support as optional in‑app purchases, while the base app remains free to use. Perfect for runners, hikers, photographers, sailors, gardeners, and anyone who wants to know when it will get light or dark.

User Reviews

Summary: Users love Sundial Solar & Lunar Time for its comprehensive, at-a-glance sun, moon, and daylight data, with alarms and moon phase, all accessible on iPhone and Apple Watch. The watch ring and complications are especially praised, as is the clean, single-screen interface that supports planning outdoor activities. However, recurring concerns center on the shift to a paid Extras model and precluding free features, as well as iPad stability issues where the app may fail to display correctly. Overall, the app is highly valued for consolidation and planning, with these recurring drawbacks noted by multiple users.
Pros
  • All-in-one sun/moon data with alerts (sunrise, daylight length, twilight) and moon phase for easy daily planning.
  • Excellent Apple Watch support with a Sundial ring and complications.
  • Clear, easy-to-read interface; data on a single screen; great for quick planning.
  • Works across iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch for cross-device access.
  • Highly useful for planning outdoor activities and travel with reliable solar-lunar data.
Cons
  • Paywall / Sundial Extras: free features reduced or removed after trial, with paid unlocks required for alerts and extras.
  • iPad compatibility issues: app sometimes doesn’t display correctly or works inconsistently on iPad.
  • Apple Watch compatibility issues: some users report watch complications do not work or purchases are not recognized.

I have used this app to alert me on daily sunrise, mid-morning/afternoon, and sunsets; and enjoy playing around with its user interface to preview upcoming daylight trends. The moon phase is cool too, but doesn’t really matter to my day to day activities. A big thanks for allowing me to seamlessly glance at my iPad, iPhone, and watch to get a sense of the day. Just want to say, solar noon should always hover around clock 12:00; if the USA removes a time shift, then Standard Time needs to be adopted.

Downloaded this app this afternoon and tried to set it up just before going to bed. It said: “Sundial Extras Trial Ended Your 3 day trial of Sundial Extras and unlimited Sundial alerts has ended. If you would like to enable or create a new alert, please unlock Sundial Extras.” They want $ for me to try the app, lol. Nah, I’m good. Deleted.
