Features & Capabilities

Polar Scope Align calculates the exact position of Polaris or Sigma Octantis for your date and location, enabling quick and precise polar alignment. It accounts for atmospheric refraction and other small effects, and supports automatic time and location, as well as corrections for off-center reticles. You can match the reticle to your scope from a large catalog (iOptron, Skywatcher, Orion, Takahashi, Telrad, Vixen, and many others) and keep a zero position for common mounts.

The free version is ad-supported. The Pro edition adds manual time/date/location input, zoomable reticle view, daytime alignment tools, lunar calendar, compass and bubble level, and a vast Deep Space Object database with 22,000+ objects. It also includes 30+ calculators for observing and astrophotography, Push-To help for non-goto scopes, Wi‑Fi mount control, world location downloads, and more. With battery-friendly red night mode and configurable night/day colors, Polar Scope Align is designed for both visual observers and astrophotographers, especially in lower latitudes where precise refraction corrections are important.

User Reviews

Polar Scope Align is a feature-rich, beginner-friendly tool with a vast reticle/database and strong free-version value. Users praise its ease of use, broad scope compatibility, helpful design features (night vision mode, battery saver, GoTo data), and responsive developer support. However, several reviews note inconsistent accuracy tied to hardware, hemisphere-specific issues, occasional time-display glitches, and some ad-related UI annoyances. Despite these, many rely on it for faster, reliable polar alignment and potential upgrades to PRO.
Pros
  • Huge reticle and mount database; supports a wide range of polar scopes and mounts.
  • Very easy to use with clear, beginner-friendly guidance that tells you where Polaris should be based on your location and time.
  • Excellent value in the free version with substantial functionality; a strong case for upgrading to PRO.
  • Rich features and thoughtful design (night-vision friendly UI, red mode, battery saver, tips for older setups, and convenient GoTo data).
  • Accurate for many users and supported by responsive, attentive developer feedback.
Cons
  • Inconsistent accuracy depending on hardware (mount/tripod) and some setups; PA can vary.
  • Southern hemisphere usability can be problematic for some users (e.g., fixed sigma octantis display).
  • Occasional time display or GMT/LST issues and other accuracy glitches.
  • Ads/UI distractions (banner ads or ad elements) reported by some users.
  • A minority find it worthless for beginners.

This is one of the few apps I’ve found that has a ton of options for reticles. Has all the mounts you can think of. Free version is phenomenal and you should consider supporting the devs!
