Draw, sketch, pen handwriting

Features & Capabilities

Carbo lets you capture and organize handwritten notes and sketches on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Its hybrid visualization renders your handwriting as clean, monochrome representations that preserve the expressiveness of your drawings, blending vector sharpness with bitmap editing.

Features include image-based input (photo, camera roll, iCloud Drive), precise Apple Pencil drawing, editable notes, searchable annotations, and color-tagged organization. Notes can be stored on-device or synced to iCloud, Evernote, or Dropbox, and exported in seven handcrafted styles with up to 1200-dpi black-and-white outputs for print. Carbo is a universal app across iPhone, iPad, and Mac, with Pro Pack 2 or Pro Plan options to remove limits and unlock all features.

User Reviews

Users praise Carbo for high-quality scans, vector-based editing, and Apple Pencil support, along with easy note organization and Dropbox-backed backups. However, the app struggles with exporting and notebook-level sharing, clunky organization tools, stability issues, and price concerns. Some request better cloud integration and more drawing features. Overall, it’s a capable scanner/editor that falls short on exporting, notebook management, and reliability for some users.
Pros
  • Excellent scan quality with vector-based editing that lets you move and tweak scanned content.
  • Apple Pencil support enables precise drawing and annotation.
  • Simple, intuitive editing interface for rearranging notes and content.
  • Useful for backing up handwritten notes/notebooks and organizing content with cloud storage options like Dropbox.
  • Export options are available for sharing basic content and basic archival needs.
Cons
  • Export/sharing is limited: cannot export multiple scans or an entire notebook to PDF, and archiving uses a .carbo format that others can't read.
  • Organization and naming are clumsy: you can't name documents, tagging is per page and not easily bulk-managed.
  • Crashes and occasional syncing problems disrupt work.
  • Pricing is perceived as high for the features offered.
  • Missing cross-platform/cloud features (no iCloud Drive support) and limited advanced export options.

I was worried when I saw that this app went to a subscription plan, especially after losing functionality in other paid apps after they’ve done the same. Im happy to see that I haven’t lost any of the functionality of the app and it still works great. Thanks!

Carbo has long been my go to for scanning written notes. It’s clear and allows me manipulate the scan exactly as I want. Its export options work well. I haven’t used the pencil option much, but it has come in handy. As someone who prefers to write on paper then scan for long term reference it’s perfect for me and well worth the investment.

7.99 for a below average pencil app. You do the math.
