Features & Capabilities

Watch Live TV on iPhone or iPad using your HDHomeRun tuner over your local network. This iOS app supports both OTA and cable channels and requires iOS 11 or newer and a compatible HDHomeRun device on the same LAN.

Features include fast channel changes, pause/FF/RW for live TV (DVR not required for these controls), built-in program data and logos, and an intuitive on-screen display to manage captions and audio tracks. The app provides current and next guidance, a consolidated channel list, and 14-day guide data for DVR users (24 hours for non-DVR). Data and images are licensed by Gracenote, and playback is limited to your home network.

User Reviews

Users largely praise HDHomeRun for broad channel access, cross-device reliability, VPN-based remote viewing, and straightforward setup. However, the app suffers from repeated instability, especially on Apple TV, with frequent crashes or channels disappearing after updates. Crashes/freezes occur across iOS/macOS as well. Core drawbacks include missing features like mute/PI P and background audio, a clunky UI, and DRM/encryption limits that block some ATSC 3.0 channels. Overall, strong concept but notable UX and stability issues.
Pros
  • Reliable across Apple devices (iOS, macOS, Apple TV) with long-term use
  • Wide channel availability and fast channel changes
  • VPN/remotely accessible viewing (watch from anywhere)
  • Supports recording/live TV from antenna and playback on other devices
  • Easy setup and straightforward initial configuration
Cons
  • Apple TV-specific instability: frequent stops and 'no channels found' after updates
  • Frequent crashes/freezes across iOS/macOS and after updates
  • Missing essential features: no mute/volume control, no Picture-in-Picture, no background audio
  • Poor UI/UX and performance: non-native UI, sluggish menus, perceived low quality
  • Encryption/DRM limitations blocking ATSC 3.0 channels and some content
Recent reviews
The recording, pause, play, etc is very unstable and clunky. You cannot use your antenna when there is no internet, which is exactly why I installed the antenna. A most disappointing app. Ok in a pinch to watch local stuff.

To developer: Please make the rudimentary Mac keyboard shortcuts work: Cmd+Q should quit the app rather than bringing up the search.
