Features & Capabilities

BlitzortungLive is a monitoring application that displays lightning strikes in near real time on an interactive map. It lets you watch thunderstorms as they unfold, with the most recent strikes shown prominently and older events represented by colored dots for easy context.

The app supports a live strike display, configurable push alerts for defined areas, and multilingual support (English, German, French, Spanish, and Russian). The Blitzortung-Live app is an additional service to the main Blitzortung.org project. For questions or to order hardware, consult Blitzortung.org’s documentation, FAQs, and discussion board.

User Reviews

BlitzortungLive is praised for being free, easy to use, and delivering timely, global lightning data that helps outdoor users stay safe with alerts. Its strengths include straightforward operation, real-time strike visualization, and broad coverage. Common criticisms focus on data reliability across regions (missed/delayed strikes), the lack of a clear legend for map dots and colors, and readability issues that blur older or nearby strikes. Some users also request additional features (radar view, improved map controls). Overall, strong utility with notable accuracy and visualization caveats.
Pros
  • Free to use with essential lightning tracking and no heavy prerequisites.
  • Real-time, current lightning data with global and local views; data described as solid and timely.
  • Strong safety utility for outdoors and maritime users; proximity alerts help you seek shelter.
  • Easy to use with a straightforward interface and no unnecessary frills.
  • Global coverage and educational value; can teach about lightning phenomena and be used worldwide.
Cons
  • Inconsistent data: some strikes are not recorded or significantly delayed, with regional accuracy gaps (e.g., Montana).
  • Visualization clarity: map dots/colors lack a clear legend, making interpretation difficult.
  • Readability issues: color schemes (yellow/orange) and dot sizes can blend, making older or nearby strikes hard to distinguish.
  • Limited feature set and UI/UX gaps: users want radar-like views, clearer map explanations, and easier radius resizing.

Seems to register only half of the strikes and some are extremely delayed. I’ve had several lightning strikes near me and none are recorded in the app.

I WOULD NOT WANT TO BE WITHOUT IT… I’ve been using this app for several years now and it has been working its little tail off. Its free and fabulous. Get it loaded and you’ll get notifications like never before …. Yeah, baby!
