User Reviews

Users broadly praise Fastmail for privacy, a robust feature set (aliases, masked email, custom domains) and a clean, focused experience with strong support. However, the iOS app is frequently criticized for slow loading, lag, and stability issues, plus notification reliability problems. Reviewers want a more modern UI with OS integrations (widgets) and smoother performance. A few mention confusing pricing/paywall behavior. Overall, service quality is solid, but the mobile app’s reliability and polish need improvement.
Pros
  • Privacy-focused and data protection
  • Extensive feature set (aliases, masked email, custom domains, JMAP)
  • Fast, reliable performance and cross-device consistency
  • Strong customer support
  • Simple, clean, focused design with inbox control
Cons
  • App performance issues: slow loading, lag, and stability problems
  • Notification reliability problems (missed, delayed, or incorrect actions)
  • Stability/buggy behavior (hangs, not loading, occasional crashes)
  • Outdated UI and lack of OS integrations (no widgets; limited modern UI polish)
  • Pricing/paywall confusion and plan requirements
Recent reviews
Fastmail has tons of flexibility and features, but does a great job of staying out of your way. And being able to reach out directly to real humans for support is incredible. Plus, having masked emails built in, custom aliases, and unlimited(!!) custom domains and catch-all addresses is unlike ANY other email provider that I’m aware of. And trust me, I’m aware of almost all of them. The company is employee/owned, so no mega-corps here. Plus, according to job listings on their website, their support staff is unionized, which is awesome! As far as alternatives are concerned, Gmail and others scan your emails for targeted advertising, which is just not good. Plus, they’re the incumbent, so they haven’t had to meaningfully innovate in over a decade. Proton advertises end to end encryption for your emails, but that’s only really true when you email another proton user. At that point, just use Signal; it’s WAY better. Fastmail has a whole blog post on this topic. Plus, Proton’s CEO has said some… politically unaware? questionable? things in recent years.

I like Fastmail but the font size on iPhone is tiny and there is no setting to change this. And it does not respond to font size changes in system. It’s not good.
