User Reviews

Bird ID Hawaii is highly praised for its intuitive interface, strong island-filtering capabilities, and detailed, useful species notes. Users appreciate browsing by island, habitat, color, or name, plus multimedia content and clear endemic/exotic distinctions. Many reviewers report reliable offline use and strong field usability. The main drawbacks are the lack of robust island-specific categorization and occasional audio playback issues on older devices. Overall, it’s well-crafted and valuable for Hawaii birding, with demand for improved island-focused organization.
Pros
  • Easy to navigate and has an intuitive user interface.
  • Island-based browsing: easy to switch/filter by island.
  • Rich, concise species write-ups with habitat and color context.
  • Multimedia content: high-quality photos, videos, and bird sounds.
  • Flexible search filters (by name, habitat, color) with clear endemic vs exotic distinctions.
Cons
  • Island-based categorization/filtering is lacking or not clearly implemented; users want per-island content organization.
  • Audio playback can be unreliable on older devices (sounds may not play).
  • Content could be better organized to show only birds present on the current island, reducing reading about birds on other islands.

I just got this app a couple days ago after losing my book. It is actually quite good. Easy to navigate. Easy to find the bird you are looking for because you can look up by name such as “parakeet” or “dove”. The book also organizes by habitat or color. In addition you can, by tapping at the top of the screen, limit the list to a specific island. His notes for each bird are informative. I have birded a long time but this is my first trip to Hawaii and this book has been helpful. Well done.

I start by saying I am not a serious type of birder... no life lists, and I enjoy "discovering" a bird each time I discover it. With that caveat, I think this app is just what I need for my next trip to Hawaii. It wil run without internet, can narrow it down to one island, and gives the sounds in most cases. I'll write again after I return from Maui.

This app is so helpful because it every island and which birds are on it and in which habitats. I love love love using it. The ability to switch between islands is so fabulous. Do you get my drift. Get this app pro or beginner you will love it.
