Overview

Features & Capabilities

Qwant Private Search is a privacy-first Chrome extension designed to protect your online queries. Since 2013, Qwant has not collected personal data, and your search history stays private and never sold. This extension puts you in control: your searches belong to you, and your data isn't exposed to trackers or advertisers.

It also delivers a private browsing experience with ad blocking, tabs, and private mode. The built-in Zap button lets you erase all browsing data in one click, before or after every session. Take back control of your data and browse with peace of mind. It's free to use.

Qwant Private Search is highly regarded for strong privacy, easy setup, and solid search quality, plus good history/data deletion controls and a privacy-respecting, non–US-based stance. Pros
  • Strong privacy and not tracking compared with mainstream search engines
  • Easy to configure with a user-friendly UX and clear privacy controls
  • High-quality, varied search results with a privacy-respecting approach
  • Good history/data deletion controls and transparency around data
  • Not US-based, appealing as a privacy-focused alternative
Cons
  • Ads and pop-ups can be intrusive; users want a built-in ad blocker
  • AI features presence is controversial; some users prefer no AI or opt-out options
  • Reliability issues: search can be unreliable or intermittently unavailable at times
  • Some concerns about search history being stored or visible despite deletion, raising privacy questions

This is from this company’s privacy policy: They retain the keywords entered associated with a pseudonymous (NOT ANONYMOUS) identifier calculated from the User Account data and the salted hash of your IP address for 1 month. (Note: They were almost fined for the “pseudonymous” thing but haven’t changed since French government owns about 20% stake) The keywords are then retained for 12 months for aggregated statistical analysis purposes. Again only pseudonymous. Qwant can transfer the following pseudonymized data to Microsoft: Search keywords, browser information, full IP address (they use works like “may” and “possible” of course), then salted hash generated from your IP address, User Agent, and a salt changing at least every 3 months. Finally, as part of providing new features, Qwant shares your IP address with Microsoft to provide you with contextual ads and better search results.
