User Reviews

Users praise FluentU for engaging, media-rich language content and a unique learning approach, especially with quizzes. However, recurring problems destabilize the experience: frequent crashes, billing and pricing confusion, mobile keyboard/input limitations, onboarding/trial friction, and video playback issues. These reliability and UX gaps appear across multiple reviews, undermining the otherwise promising concept of video-based language learning.
Pros
  • Engaging learning experience with interactive exercises and quizzes.
  • Media-rich content that uses video (films, culture, accents) to aid language learning.
  • A distinctive flashcard-based learning approach that some users find effective.
Cons
  • Frequent crashes and reliability issues on iOS (app not opening, stuck on logo, crashes during use).
  • Billing and pricing problems (hidden pricing, charges after cancellation, trial-to-full-year charges).
  • Mobile input limitations (lack of international keyboard support, quizzes hard to answer without keyboard).
  • Onboarding/trial friction (forced two-week trial, difficulty canceling or deleting account).
  • Video loading/playback issues (videos failing to load, clips advance too quickly, limited pronunciation practice).

Their extension and App works for all other languages but Chinese. When you switch to Chinese subtitles extension shows English or Korean, I’ve never chosen to learn Korean. In the App account, when you pick Chinese it teaches you Japanese instead, I’ve never chosen to learn Japanese. I even forced a switch to Chinese in the website url and still ended up Japanese. Pinyin annotate is a free extension and works all the time. While this won’t

This service is quite frustrating, I paid for a year of the plus service and it could be a great service for language learning but there are definitely problems that I feel can hinder one’s progress, the quizzes are way too long, for a 4 minute video the quiz is taking me well over an hour, I would skip the quizzes altogether except it appears to be the only way to mark a video as completed. And for this particular 4 minute video, the quiz finally ran out of questions and the video is still showing as incomplete, so I wasted over an hour fooling around with this quiz just to get the video completed and it still won’t mark it completed. I need the videos I watched already marked as complete so I can move on to other videos and feel like I am making some kind of progress. This service is way too expensive to be having these kinds of problems, completely defeats the purpose of it being a learning platform when I can’t even mark videos complete. Also it would be nice if there was a shuffle button so you can get a random video to watch and not have to go through hundreds of videos as this can be overwhelming. I may just cancel the membership after my 1 year
