Features & Capabilities

ScratchJr lets young children (ages 5-7) learn to code by snapping together graphical blocks to create stories and games, promoting problem solving, design thinking, and creative expression.

ScratchJr is inspired by Scratch and developed through a collaboration between MIT Media Lab's Lifelong Kindergarten group, the Developmental Technologies group at Tufts University, and the Playful Invention Company. It has received support from NSF, the Scratch Foundation, LEGO Foundation, and British Telecommunications to help kids build early numeracy and literacy in a fun, motivating context.

User Reviews

ScratchJr is praised for being kid-friendly and easy to use, with strong creative potential through drawing and simple animations. However, users frequently report key drawbacks: a strict 4-slide limit that restricts longer projects, drawing/brush issues and unstable lines, and a lack of many Scratch-like coding features (variables, sensing, addons). Many want more media options and blocks while keeping it accessible for children. Overall, it’s a gentle intro to coding with room for growth.
Pros
  • Easy and kid-friendly interface that makes ScratchJr approachable for children.
  • Great for drawing, backgrounds and simple animations; encourages creativity.
  • Provides a foundational Scratch-like experience with simple coding concepts.
  • Overall enjoyable and useful for learning and making projects.
Cons
  • 4-slide/page limit severely restricts longer projects.
  • Drawing and brush controls are buggy or inconsistent; curved lines and unstable drawing.
  • Limited coding features; lacks variables, sensing, and add-ons compared to Scratch.
  • Requests for more features like importing photos/sounds and cross-scene blocks.
