Features & Capabilities

Fire Finder is your best source for finding information and images of wildfires in the United States. Display fire data on a convenient map with satellite imagery or choose from a list of fires.

Key features include maps of wildfire locations and fire perimeter data (where available), a photo gallery, and information from state and federal sources such as inciweb.org, fire.ca.gov, U.S. Forest Service, and more. The app also maps active fire perimeters from geomac.gov and makes it easy to share fire images and details with friends and loved ones.

User Reviews

Users largely praise the app for an easy-to-use interface and a helpful map view, and some find it useful for quick reference or planning travel to avoid fires. However, many reviews repeatedly flag significant timeliness problems: updates are slow or non-existent, current fires near users aren’t shown, and coverage varies by region. Reviewers also want better filtering by state or distance and more reliable, real-time alerts. Overall, the app shows potential but suffers from critical reliability and coverage issues that undermine safety decisions.
Pros
  • Easy-to-use interface for quick reference.
  • Maps showing fire locations and general context.
  • Helpful for travelers to avoid fires.
  • Perceived credible information source by some users (e.g., former wildland firefighter).
Cons
  • Not real-time or up-to-date; updates are slow or missing for many fires.
  • Frequent misses of current or nearby fires; critical incidents often not shown.
  • Limited filtering and area targeting (no easy way to filter by state, distance, or home location).
  • Inconsistent coverage across regions; delays affect reliability for safety decisions.
  • Some users feel the app isn’t worth the price due to reliability and timely updates.

App is not real time and possibly not even real

3 years ago, I found this to be informative. For the last year or so, with many fires with a last update 3 or more weeks ago. New fires are not shown for several days or more. Or not at all. Not much value to me.
