Features & Capabilities

The Maine Island Trail is a water trail that connects over 200 islands and mainland sites along the Coast of Maine. The first recreational water trail in North America, the Maine Island Trail allows small boaters to explore and camp among thousands of islands in the most spectacular paddling/cruising grounds in the continental US.

Partnering with Maine-based, Chimani, the Maine Island Trail Association (MITA) has developed an app for its members and the public to explore the Trail virtually. This free app allows anyone to view some publicly-owned islands, learn about the Trail, see spectacular photos, pump-outs, tide charts, safety information, and launch sites, and to see MITA news and events, etc. Membership with MITA is required to view privately-owned sites.

Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.

User Reviews

User reviews praise MITA's app as a content-rich, well-organized planning tool with tide data, anchorages, and easy access to launch and camping info. Members benefit from content; many call it a strong resource and a great companion for Maine island adventures, especially for multi-day trips. However, multiple reviewers report stability and data issues: crashes on startup or settings page, updates causing crashes and data loss, old data not migrating and backups failing. UI responsiveness and dark-mode readability issues are also noted. Overall, content quality is high, but reliability and data preservation need fixes, with membership gating a mixed factor.
Pros
  • Comprehensive, content-rich resource for Maine island planning (anchorages, launches, camping, tides).
  • Integrated tide data and planning information, making it a one-stop tool for trips.
  • Well-organized, user-friendly app for a small nonprofit; easy to navigate.
  • Membership unlocks the best content and supports MITA.
  • Excellent for plotting adventures and multi-day trips; strong overall value.
Cons
  • Frequent crashes and startup/load failures (crashes on startup, when opening, or on settings pages).
  • Content access is gated by MITA membership, limiting full functionality for non-members.
  • Data migration/backup issues tied to updates (reports of data loss and old data not migrating).
Recent reviews
No thought given to experience, just a basic downloadable database. Missing commentary that comes with printed guide. Images load slow, screens are poorly rendered and navigation menu text is illegible when device is on dark mode. Developer Chimani has a bunch of cookie cutter apps that follow the same template. Feels low budget.

The app doesn’t work at all. I have a fully updated iPhone 11 Pro Max and app. I’ve never made it past the loading screen. Is there a fix on the way?

This app used to be great but the new update makes the app crash every time it tries to open.
