User Reviews

Users praise LookUp for its clean design and useful Word of the Day feature, with a strong dictionary core and solid watchOS experience. However, many reviews highlight pain points: heavy monetization and limited free access, frequent bugs and performance problems across devices, inconsistent cross-device functionality (Shortcuts, collections, offline support, and desktop access), and occasional subscription persistence issues. The app’s content and design are valued, but pricing and reliability remain major drawbacks.
Pros
  • Uncluttered, visually appealing UI that is easy to use and navigate.
  • Word of the Day widget and daily word support is a valued feature.
  • Reliable dictionary content that many users find helpful for writing and vocabulary building.
  • Strong watchOS experience and design improvements for Apple Watch.
Cons
  • Monetization and paywalls: most features are locked behind LookUp+ and the free tier is very limited.
  • Bugs and reliability issues across devices: crashes (especially on Apple Watch), slow searches, and occasional blank previews after updates.
  • Cross-device limitations and feature gaps: issues with Shortcuts, collections saving, offline support, and lack of desktop sync.
  • Subscription persistence issues: some users report their subscription being forgotten or requiring reinstallation to regain access.

Using LookUp is like stepping into an art museum for words. Its images and typography are bright and welcoming—nobody needs a map to navigate—and I have frequented its galleries for many years now. I have curated my own collections from books I’ve read, loving some and saving others. The Notes feature has allowed me to make my own contributions. I can record where I first stumbled across each new word. Gaskell, Elliot, Wordsworth, and Keats are a few recent authors and poets that your app has helped me navigate, and they also walk its galleries. I am curious to see where the creativity and curation will go next.

I think the app is great. The content and presentation are great. I runs flawlessly on my iPad and my iPhone. I have three different Mac computers. It errors every time I try to open it on all three machines. It has been this way from the start. I’ve written twice to the developer, Squircle Apps LLP. It has been over a month and I’ve never received a response. An online search indicates this is a known problem. The app needs to be fixed or the developer needs to quit advertising they support Mac. It is a lie.
