User Reviews

MapleRead SE is praised for deep customization, strong Calibre integration, and TTS/highlighting, plus active development. However, it faces recurring import/adding pain, onboarding/UI usability concerns, manual cross-device sync friction, and intermittent stability bugs. Overall, it’s powerful for large libraries and power users, but would benefit from smoother onboarding, more stable import flows, and automatic syncing improvements to appeal to a broader audience.
Pros
  • Deep customization and a feature-rich reading experience, including adjustable fonts, layouts, colors, metadata editing, and a 'classic book' look.
  • Excellent Calibre integration and library management, with Calibre sync/import, OPDS support, and metadata control.
  • Built-in reading features like TTS, highlighting (and underlining options), and page/lookup aids for an enhanced reading session.
  • Active development with regular updates and responsive support from the team.
Cons
  • Importing/adding books is difficult and error-prone, with duplicates, missing items, and flaky file discovery (and related Dropbox import issues).
  • Onboarding and UI feel outdated and not intuitive, making it hard to start or locate features.
  • Manual cross-device syncing is required and frustrating, with progress not automatically syncing across devices.
  • Stability issues and flaky imports/operations, including black screens on launch for epubs, PDF margin problems, and occasional crashes (e.g., when creating themes) or clunky imports.

Why don’t more people know about MapleRead? I’ve been using this now for several years and couldn’t ever go back to Apple’s app. No way. Updates are regular and it truly deserves to be better known. A++++ Edit 12/21/2025: The best has gotten even better. I absolutely LOVE this app!

I import books and some won’t show up on the shelf. If I try to import it again, it still doesn’t show up and says it’s duplicated. I also cannot open the book with the app but it opens normally on other apps. This doesn’t happen with all books and sometimes the app will function normally 1 day and then the next day a book will be missing. I wish Moonreader+ was on the app store because I hate this app. update: I am in the all books tab. I see the parenthesis say 8 books but it only shows 5 covers. It seems to only exclude pdfs. I have fixed this by immediately moving pdfs to a new shelf and tagging them after import. If I don’t, they do not show up on the shelf and I am not able to find them again once they are out of the queue.

I’m loving the app on my iPad Pro 13in (m5), and features are unlimited. Love that I can have my book read to me when I’m busy at home and can’t physically read. I also love the fact that I can pick classic book to transform my book into an actual look alike physical book. If it’s possible work on adding page turn sounds. Using the classic book feature and page turn sounds will most definitely take digital reading to another level. (my opinion) Endless features keep the updates coming!
