Pros

Deep customization and a feature-rich reading experience, including adjustable fonts, layouts, colors, metadata editing, and a 'classic book' look.
Excellent Calibre integration and library management, with Calibre sync/import, OPDS support, and metadata control.

Cons

Importing/adding books is difficult and error-prone, with duplicates, missing items, and flaky file discovery (and related Dropbox import issues).
Onboarding and UI feel outdated and not intuitive, making it hard to start or locate features.
Manual cross-device syncing is required and frustrating, with progress not automatically syncing across devices.
Stability issues and flaky imports/operations, including black screens on launch for epubs, PDF margin problems, and occasional crashes (e.g., when creating themes) or clunky imports.

Recent reviews

I chose MapleRead SE for its stability and EPUB compatibility, and I especially enjoy the landscape two-page reading mode on my iPad. When I encountered an image layout issue with one EPUB, the support team responded promptly, reproduced the problem, and fixed it in version 7.1 about two weeks later. the book now displays correctly. A great reading app backed by a team that listens to users and follows through. Very happy with my purchase!

The app is great, and I love its features (particularly tagging and the personal server), I just have one recommendation. The read aloud feature is a wonderful idea, but I find it lacking. The voices available are incredibly robotic and choppy. I'd absolutely love it if we could have a slightly more natural sounding voice and perhaps a bit more intuitive controls (audio speed). Otherwise, I absolutely love the app. Great job!
