User Reviews

Story Planner is praised for its clean UI and powerful planning toolkit, including tagging, image attachments, and cross-device syncing, with a favorable one-time price. Recurrent concerns center on data integrity: syncing problems and data loss across devices, plus occasional lag. Several reviews note it isn’t ideal for long-form prose and that cross-project item copying is limited. Overall it’s a strong planning app that shines when its syncing and stability issues are manageable.
Pros
  • Clear interface and ease of use
  • One-time purchase with no subscriptions and deep toolbox for the price
  • Comprehensive planning features (characters, locations, plots, scenes, timelines) with customization
  • Strong organization with tagging system and the ability to attach images and reference material
  • Sync across devices (iPhone, iPad, Mac) and good export/attachment options; aesthetically pleasing design
Cons
  • Syncing across devices can cause data loss or project deletion; reliability concerns
  • Updates can erase or reset existing work
  • Lag and performance issues (scrolling, tapping, typing delays)
  • Not ideal for actual writing; canvas is planning-focused
  • Difficulty copying/moving items across projects (e.g., transferring characters/locations between projects)

Story Planner is my go-to app for planning stories and idea capture. I deeply appreciate the clear interface and ease of use. The tagging system has become a favorite feature for me and has helped me cross reference ideas and plot through lines.

Story Planner has become one of my favorite writing tools, and a big part of that is its simple, fair approach: you pay once, and that’s it. No subscriptions lurking in the shadows. For the price, you get a surprisingly deep toolbox. What makes the app stand out is the developer’s commitment. Updates keep coming, features keep improving, and it’s clear the app isn’t being abandoned. That level of support gives the whole thing a sense of long-term reliability. As for writing features, it covers all the essentials for building a novel: characters, locations, plots, scenes, timelines, and more. But the real magic is how customizable it is. If something isn’t included by default, you can create your own categories and fields. You can even attach images and other reference material, which helps keep your worldbuilding and visual notes neatly in one place. Honestly, the app has come a long way. It started solid and has grown into something flexible, intuitive, and surprisingly powerful for the price. For any writer who wants structure without being boxed in, it’s an excellent choice.
