Chess Clock by Chess.com is a free, ad-free chess timer Chrome extension designed for quick setup and full-featured play. Choose a base time, apply Fischer or Bronstein increments, optional per-move delays, or other time controls, and start the game with a tap. The second player's button starts the first player's clock, and the timer runs smoothly.

Designed for all devices, it supports landscape and portrait layouts, multi-stage time controls (like 40 moves in 2 hours + 60 minutes), handicapping, on-the-fly time adjustments, automatic pauses when interrupted, and audible alerts. Best of all, it’s completely free with no ads or in-app purchases, whether you’re online or offline.

User Reviews

Users praise Chess Clock by Chess.com for being free, ad-free, and easy to use, with flexible time controls and reliable performance suitable for practice and tournaments. Notable downsides include sound feedback inconsistencies and some requested UX improvements—simpler turn switching and color/name customization. Some users also cite a limited Fischer timing option. Overall, it’s a solid, distraction-free clock with room for interface and feature enhancements.
Pros
  • Free to use with no ads or data collection.
  • Supports a wide range of time controls (FIDE modes) and increments (Fischer) with easy presets.
  • Simple to set up and reliable, good for practice and tournaments.
  • Useful as a backup clock in Scholastic or tournament settings.
Cons
  • Sound feedback is inconsistent: some reviews praise the click sound, others report it’s missing or gone after updates.
  • Turn-switching and color/name customization could be more intuitive, with easier ways to swap turns and set player colors/names.
Recent reviews
Supports programming FIDE time control modes, with various increment schemes implemented (e.g. Fischer) and nice presets. Other features like pausing and adding time and asymmetric times. A very solid chess clock, free and no ads.

This chess clock is good. It makes timing chess easier. While this app is good enough for all five stars, I still think it would be easier to use it if we could press anywhere, on a button, or on the other player, instead of the player going right now to swap who’s turn it is, to be able to write down names for each person, and for one side of the clock to be and stay white, and the other to be and stay black so we know which color is going.
