Features & Capabilities

Calorific shows you exactly what 200 calories look like with beautiful photography.

IN THE NEWS:

“A giant truth bomb that pours its radioactive reality down on all the food lies we tell ourselves” - The Atlantic

“Instead of tracking your daily calorie intake, which can be more than tedious, the Calorific app simply shows you what 200 calories worth of food looks like along with the weight of the portion.” - Sydney Morning Herald

Why 200 calories? Because it's a nice portion size and makes it easy to recognise how many calories you are eating without needing to check the labels.

You’ve probably been told at some point how many calories you need to consume each day. But the concept of a calorie can be hard to grasp and understanding what foods contain how many calories can be even more difficult.

So what does 200 calories of any given food or drink actually look like? Well it turns out it's a whole lot of spinach but only half a spoon of peanut butter!

Each food has been meticulously researched, weighed and photographed in high definition.

** Unlocking gives you ALL 182 photos across the app, including the festive foods.

User Reviews

Users like the app’s visual approach to teaching portion sizes by showing 200-calorie portions of various foods and using it to compare foods quickly, especially helpful for visual learners. Many find the concept simple and valuable enough to purchase and use on the go. However, reviews repeatedly flag major drawbacks: calorie data can be inaccurate or inconsistent, the food database is limited, and the plate/portion scale isn’t clear. Additional issues include paywalling for more photos and frequent stability problems on some devices. Overall mixed utility.
Pros
  • Visually shows what 200 calories look like across a variety of foods, aiding portion size understanding.
  • Enables quick, side-by-side visual comparisons of calories and portions between different foods.
  • Helpful for visual learners and for retraining estimation of what you’re eating.
  • Offers a large set of photos without requiring purchase, giving a sense of value before upgrading.
  • Simple, straightforward concept that is easy to use.
Cons
  • Calorie values are inaccurate or inconsistent across foods.
  • Food database is limited with poor coverage of common items.
  • Unclear plate/portion size references and lack of a standard scale in images.
  • Upsell/paywall issues: early photos are free but full access requires paying; some users report being charged without access or broken purchase flow.
  • Stability and compatibility problems: app sometimes won’t open, freezes, or crashes on certain devices/OS versions.
Recent reviews
I was concerned about the low ratings on this app. Then I read the negative reviews. They were filled with people's misconceptions about how many calories common foods have. As someone who has been diligently tracking the calories in every possible food I can eat and finally successfully lost 40 lbs in the last 8 months, going from 28% body fat to 11% body fat, I can vouch that these pictures are accurate. I think people are especially thrown by the amount of calories in bread products. "Really? A bagel has over 200 calories??" Yes, really. Moments of shock and calibration like this have been the building blocks of my success over the last 8 months and apps like this help spread that knowledge.
