Features & Capabilities

With Animal Tracker, you can follow the movements of wild animals all over the world that are being tracked in near-real time! These movements are collected by tiny GPS tags carried by the animals and are stored at Movebank, a free online infrastructure used by hundreds of researchers to manage, share, analyze, and archive animal movement data. You can easily participate in our scientific research projects: Upload your real-life observations and photos of our tagged animals to Animal Tracker. Your observations are crucial for our scientists! We can determine the positions of the tagged animals but we are lacking behavioral observations - we can interpret our data much better with your additional observations. Therefore: become a scientist, become an Animal Tracker!

User Reviews

Users like Animal Tracker for its movement tracking and educational value, including insights about individual animals like Freedom, plus the ability to report sightings. Recurrent downsides include a limited species list (mostly birds), concerns about data freshness and inactive animals, plus UX/navigation and map performance issues. Update-related problems (e.g., loss of favorites) and device compatibility also appear across reviews, indicating reliability and usability challenges alongside the core tracking features.
Pros
  • Effective tracking of animal movements with clear visualizations.
  • Educational and engaging content about individual animals (e.g., Freedom) that inspires interest.
  • Ability to report sightings and participate in citizen science.
  • Birdwatching-oriented features and real-world usage (e.g., tracking osprey annually) are appreciated.
Cons
  • Limited species list, primarily birds; not a comprehensive wildlife tracker.
  • Data freshness issues: many animals appear inactive or missing updates, reducing perceived reliability.
  • Update/UX problems: navigation is cumbersome, and updates can cause data loss (e.g., favorites) or worsen usability.
  • Map performance and interaction issues: slow loading maps and difficulty tapping on map targets.
  • Cross-platform inconsistencies and device compatibility concerns (e.g., iOS vs Android features, older devices).

So, I’m writing this in regards to the app itself and the animals. I had went to go check on freedom, the eagle born near me in captivity and etc. and went to see he hasn’t been active in 2 years which ultimately broke my heart. Also, if there’s a way to make it easier to click on the birds on the map it would be amazing because the first 5 minutes trying to work the app it had me thinking all the animals weren’t updated in about 2 years or so and I was about to seriously sob thinking either the birds had their trackers taken off, or they had all passed away which is just… couldn’t bare to think that … just. If there’s any way to update the app to perform a little better, and I just wish someone would explain what’s up with freedom ☹️🥲
