Catholic New Jerusalem Bible

Roman 1985 NJB Audio Bible

Features & Capabilities

The New Jerusalem Bible (NJB) is a Catholic translation published in 1985. It quickly became the most widely used Roman Catholic Bible outside the United States and carries the imprimatur of Cardinal George Basil Hume. The NJB is translated directly from the Hebrew, Greek, or Aramaic, following the Jerusalem Bible's approach, with introductions and notes drawn from the Bible de Jerusalem and adjusted as needed.

This Chrome extension provides access to the NJB audio Bible, enabling listening to the 1985 NJB text in a convenient format. It reflects the NJB's emphasis on direct translation and scholarly notes, supporting study and devotional reading.

User Reviews

Users like having the New Jerusalem Bible on iOS and can read or listen to the text anywhere, praising the translation. The audio feature is a key benefit for commuting and convenience. However, recurring issues include robotic audio with limited options, missing footnotes and study notes, difficult navigation and hidden/unclear book indices, lack of highlighting/notes, and a desire for an updated edition. Improvements in audio quality, annotations, navigation, and content updates would address the main pain points.
Pros
  • Easy access to the New Jerusalem Bible on iOS, allowing reading/listening anytime.
  • Audio reading feature enables listening to the Bible on the go.
  • Positive reception of the New Jerusalem Bible translation; many users describe it as wonderful and the best Jerusalem Bible app.
  • Stable performance and reliable operation (app works well).
  • Overall appreciation and willingness to recommend the app to others.
Cons
  • Poor audio quality (robotic voice) with limited voice options, and paid audio upgrades sometimes not working.
  • Missing footnotes and commentary; requests for footnotes from older editions and study notes.
  • Difficult navigation and discoverability of books/chapters (hidden books, small navigation controls) and inefficient chapter/verse jumping.
  • Lack of highlighting/notes features and inability to take notes.
  • Outdated edition and requests for updates or newer edition (Revised NJB 2019).

No updates since I first used the app. Could look better. Just saying. Works great though. Would recommend to a friend.

I have been using this app for sometime now. I enjoy reading and listening to The Word. I paid for it before and now I am being asked to pay again. The app runs quickly through the reasons and I am not able to understand what is said.
