User Reviews

Lightmate is a free, ad-free light meter with a clean, minimalist UI that's praised for fast, accurate readings and strong suitability for film photography. It offers practical features like spot metering, camera-based metering, and 1/3 stop increments. However, reviewers note stability issues (crashes, black screens) and occasional disappearance of readings, plus a steep learning curve due to its minimal interface. Some digital-use readings can be unreliable, and several feature gaps (screenshot button, control locks, easier tutorials) are commonly requested.
Pros
  • Free to use with no ads and widely appreciated by the community.
  • Minimalist, clean UI that is simple to use once you get the hang of it.
  • Accurate exposure readings, especially for film photography (35mm and 120 film).
  • Useful features like spot metering, front/rear camera metering, and 1/3 stop increments.
  • Reliable in real-world use and a strong learning tool for quick exposures.
Cons
  • Occasional stability issues: crashes, black screens, or aperture data disappearing.
  • Overly minimalist UI can cause underexposed results and makes certain settings hard to locate or understand.
  • Digital readings can be off by about a stop in many scenarios, reducing reliability for digital workflows.
  • Missing usability features: screenshot button, lock for ISO/Shutter/Aperture, longer on-screen reference, and easier tutorials.
  • Some reviewers report unclear labeling of settings and a learning curve that complicates first-time use.

This is my favorite light meter app, by far. An extremely simple and easy way to get accurate metering quickly, and it looks great too. A bit of a learning curve (it’s extremely minimalist) but brilliant once you get the hang of it.

I use Lightmate all the time with my Mint RF70. Every photo that I’ve used the metering results from Lightmate have come out stellar. If time permits, I never take a photo without it. Highly recommended. Will definitely be using this with my incoming Rollei as well.
