Features & Capabilities

Rook: Kentucky Discard is a Chrome extension that brings the popular trick-taking card game to your browser. The design is color-blind friendly, featuring a Rook card as a castle piece and a deck numbered 5–14 (with optional 1) across four suits plus the Rook.

Gameplay covers dealing, bidding to name trump, widow discards, and trick play. Points assign values to cards (Rook = 20; 14 and 10 = 10; 5 = 5), and teams aim for 300 points or a 300-point lead to win. You can adjust settings to determine how discards are allocated (to the bidder or last-trick winner). There is also a related paid Rook Gold app with no ads available on the App Store.

User Reviews

Users love the app for nostalgia, offline play, and flexible rules, plus learning benefits. Repeated downsides include weak AI, no real online play, and update-induced usability issues with bugs. They want real opponents, fairer AI, and smoother updates.
Pros
  • Nostalgia and enduring enjoyment of the classic Rook game.
  • Offline play without requiring WiFi.
  • Rules and variations are customizable, with multiple play options.
  • Helps improve Rook skills and is learning-friendly with replay features.
  • Fun and family-friendly, with broad appeal for long-time players.
Cons
  • AI partner is often weak or biased against human players, affecting competitiveness.
  • Lack of online multiplayer; desire to play against real players is frequently expressed.
  • Recent updates degrade usability (new UI hiding features, hamburger menu) and cause glitches.
  • Bugs and instability, including freezing and startup issues.
  • Partner bidding and scoring can feel unfair or poorly implemented.
Recent reviews
I would say it’s good for beginners to learn basic strategies. However, having played Rook for 40+ years the flaws in competitive game play are obvious and annoying. I have played this particular game for 4+ years. The worst aspect is that your AI partner is obviously less skilled than AI opponents. The game was better and more accurate a couple years ago. It’s a shame that the game developers implemented changes to AI rules that lowered the quality of the game!
