Features & Capabilities

The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Chrome extension helps families support early literacy by tracking how many books you read to a newborn, infant, or toddler. You can scan any book into your private library, log readings for multiple readers, and monitor your journey toward the 1,000-book goal.

If you read just one book a night, you’ll reach the milestone in about three years. The app keeps things simple and rewarding with fast scans, flexible tracking for several readers, and a clear path to kindergarten readiness.

User Reviews

Users like the idea of a single place to track their children’s reading and appreciate the visual layout that makes progress easy to see. However, repeated issues undermine the experience: the app is prone to crashes and slowdowns, books and readers can disappear or fail to save, and adding readers or new titles is often error-prone or requires manual entry. Scanning and library integration are inconsistent, with many titles missing from the catalog. Logins and data syncing problems further frustrate users. Overall, the concept is strong, but stability and reliability need significant improvement.
Pros
  • Great concept for tracking a child’s reading in one place.
  • Easy to monitor progress thanks to a visually clear interface.
  • Useful for families with multiple children to log different readers.
  • Centralized logging helps replace paper tracking and keeps history.
Cons
  • Frequent crashes, glitches, and slow performance that interrupt logging.
  • Data loss: readers disappear and progress can be erased; frequent logouts/log-in issues.
  • Difficulty adding readers/profiles; issues creating new profiles and duplicate pictures.
  • Incomplete library and unreliable scanning; many books not in library; manual entry is tedious.
  • Camera integration and book-cover photo flow issues; having to use an external camera app.

This is of course a great idea, more reading is better—but adding books is so tedious! It would be so much better if I could bulk-add books instead of individually choosing a book, selecting a child, and accepting. I have one kid, it shouldn’t take 3 steps per book.

We started 1000 books before kindergarten with my oldest son. It was difficult to track the books as we were doing it manually. The app makes it so much more easy. We read a book and scan the code and we stay on track without having to stop and write down titles.
