User Reviews

Kanji Star is praised for its comprehensive kanji catalog, engaging game-like practice, strong handwriting-focused drills, and good value with a one-time purchase. However, multiple reviews call for customizable decks, a kanji search feature, and audio pronunciations, and point to occasional stroke-recognition bugs that block progress. Overall it’s among the best kanji apps, especially for practice, but would benefit from feature additions and bug fixes to reach a perfect score.
Pros
  • Comprehensive kanji catalog with many lessons and Joyō coverage
  • Engaging, game-like and addictive learning experience
  • Good value for money with a one-time purchase and no subscription
  • User-friendly design with fast, clear practice and handwriting-focused drills
  • Positive, efficient learning feel (fastest, easiest, and clearest) and strong write-order emphasis
Cons
  • Lack of customizable lists/decks; users want smaller, thematically organized decks
  • No search functionality to quickly locate kanji or review specific characters
  • No audio pronunciations from native speakers
  • Stroke-input recognition issues and progression-blocking bugs (stroke-order accuracy)

I really like this app, because it’s simple, motivating, and feels almost like a game. One request I have would be to be able to sort flashcards into smaller decks. Working on N2 and N1 vocabulary, you’re working with a deck of 700+, and it’s basically guaranteed you’re not going to get to them all in one round. If these kanji could be sorted into bite-size chunks (maybe thematically) so we could drill smaller decks, that would be amazing.

I’m surprised more people haven’t tried this one because this is the best kanji app I’ve found. It’s super comprehensive, has lots of lesson options and a larger and more complete catalog than any other I’ve found. There’s no subscription but a really reasonable one time payment unlocked everything. It’s really the only useful app I’ve found for kanji!

After playing with the app for five minutes I found a bug where certain strokes aren’t recognized even if you do them correctly. Other strokes aren’t as precise and accept any input. App won’t let you progress till you get the order right so this is an issue.
