User Reviews

Users praise Hiragana Times for strong content, translations, and breadth for learners. However, recurring issues include access and entitlement (logins, resets, content loss), billing problems, app reliability (slow performance, crashes, audio), and weak support. Prioritizing stable account management, reliable access to purchased content, smooth payments, better playback, and responsive support would address the most-mentioned concerns.
Pros
  • Excellent writing, Japanese/English translation, and audio make it a valuable resource for learners.
  • Content covers a wide range of language levels from beginner to native, appealing to many readers.
  • The magazine is well put together and appreciated for quality content.
Cons
  • Persistent access/subscription entitlement issues: login problems, password reset failures, and inability to read or restore purchased issues.
  • Billing and payment problems: being charged for issues despite subscription, failed payments (e.g., Apple Pay), and refunds.
  • Poor app reliability: slow loading, frequent crashes, and non-working audio playback.
  • Content delivery problems: downloaded issues disappearing after subscription ends; purchased issues not appearing on bookshelf.
  • Weak customer support and broken contact options: unresponsive help, broken developer links, and slow responses.

This looks like an interesting zine but the font is too small for my tired old eyes, even when I set the font size as large as possible. I use it on an I-pad..

Saw the print copy in the bookstore and wanted to subscribe. Created an account online, tried to login to the app, could not find my account. Tried to purchase a subscription with ApplePay, repeatedly denied. Sorry, your competitor‘s app works fine, so I am using that instead.

Hiragana Times is very well put together with both excellent writing and Japanese/English translation and audio. So helpful for both the Japanese learner and anyone interested in Japan!
