User Reviews

The Doctor Who Magazine app excels in delivering on-day access, strong visuals, and international usability, with content that pleases Classic and NuWho fans. However, it suffers from iPhone readability issues, checkout/subscription glitches, poor comic image resolution on mobile, issues with downloaded content disappearing, and limited back-issue access, all of which hinder a seamless reading experience.
Pros
  • Same-day digital availability for each issue (aligned with the UK release) at a reduced price.
  • High-quality scans and a clean, well-designed digital layout that look good on iPad.
  • Good for international readers with an easy, US-friendly digital subscription option.
  • Early access of new issues—digital copies arrive before or as soon as they hit newsstands.
  • Strong content value that appeals to both Classic and NuWho fans, sustaining interest over time.
Cons
  • Poor readability on iPhone due to lack of an iPhone-optimized layout; text is small and not easily legible without zooming.
  • subscription/purchase flow is buggy: subscription not recognized, new issues sometimes require payment, restore purchases often fails, and downloads can fail.
  • Comic images and small print are hard to read on mobile devices due to low resolution; readability is a recurring issue.
  • Downloaded issues sometimes disappear from the iPad, forcing re-downloads or losing access unexpectedly.
  • Archive access is limited (not enough back issues) and managing purchased vs available issues can be confusing, with filtering improvements requested.

Doctor Who Magazine, for those who know, started as just another magazine for Doctor Who fans in 1979. The news, which, at that time, there was no internet, was about Tom Baker and the change in his companions. At that point in time, the news about Doctor Who was coming out like a fire hose, especially about Baker’s successor, who turned out to be Peter Davison. Since then, some of the wiser decisions were to tone it down for a month, and to get interviews with the earlier Doctors and companions, especially Patrick Troughton and Frazier Hines. As Doctor Who Magazine hitched itself to Marvel, it still kept producing good quality, especially through the Wilderness Years. Today, Doctor Who Magazine still represents the gold standard for fandom magazines.
