Features & Capabilities

Livescribe+ pairs with the Livescribe 3 or Aegir pen to instantly sync your handwriting to iPhone or iPad. Your notes, sketches, diagrams, and drawings appear in Livescribe+ and become more useful when they are organized, tagged, searchable, and converted to text. Access your notes in three views: Page View (original notebooks), Feed View (actionable snippets in a timeline), and Pencast View (playback of audio synced to your notes).

Convert handwritten notes to text to turn them into tasks, reminders, calendar events, or contacts. Import shared pages into Illustrator or other vector apps for editing your own hand-drawn art, and create pencasts with photos and memos to add depth. Save pencasts as video and share PDFs of notes, pictures, and pencasts via Mail, Messages, AirDrop, Evernote, OneNote, Dropbox, and more.

User Reviews

Overall, Livescribe+ is a mixed bag. Some users praise its ability to bridge paper notebooks with digital notes and to transcribe handwriting, with strong workflow gains on Mac systems. However, many reviews report reliability issues: connectivity and pairing failures, frequent crashes, and unstable syncing or data transfer. Export/sharing features are often broken or limited. Performance varies across platforms, and support is sometimes unresponsive. The app’s value depends heavily on device, pen model, and willingness to troubleshoot.
Pros
  • Unifies handwritten notes with digital notes, improving workflow.
  • Handwriting transcription can be accurate and quick.
  • MacOS (Mac Studio) works well for some users, indicating cross-platform usability.
  • Recognizes and records on older notebooks, expanding usability.
Cons
  • Frequent connectivity and pairing problems between the pen and the app.
  • Frequent crashes and instability, including crashes at startup.
  • Syncing/export limitations and data transfer issues (e.g., trouble exporting to Quicknote/Google Drive).
  • Inconsistent iOS/macOS performance; some devices show blank pages or fail to load data.
  • Customer support is often unresponsive or unhelpful.

I have the Livescribe 3 smart pen and have for years, it won’t connect to the app and the app crashes when I try to pair to the pen again. I hasn’t paired in over a year despite being connected to Bluetooth

I use to love live scribe, not over the last few years the quality has become HORRIBLE. It is more hassle than it is worth. Stay away.

First use was great. It did transcribe my couple of sentences. Then I added more and that worked. I added more and couldn’t get it to transcribe the text though it appeared in the page image. The software has no “force transcription” option. So, I wrote at the bottom of the page and that triggered a scan of the entire page. Other stability problem: when you are looking at a transcription and select “Share transcript text and then “Save to Quicknote” it does open Quicknote but it doesn’t transfer the text; it’s just an empty note. They have been making this produce for more than a decade, surely they could have improved the UI by now and its stability.
