User Reviews

RayLab is a powerful, affordable iPad optics simulator that supports Zemax imports and a wide range of elements. It's praised for its intuitive design and educational value, and for solid developer support. Common drawbacks are stability issues and a subscription model that restricts many features to Pro, limiting free use.
Pros
  • Powerful and versatile ray-tracing/optics simulation on iPad.
  • Affordable alternative to expensive optics software with great value.
  • Can import Zemax models and supports a wide range of optical elements.
  • Simple, intuitive interface with strong educational value for learning and teaching.
  • Responsive support and active development from the developers.
Cons
  • Stability issues: frequent crashes and bugs that disrupt use.
  • Subscription-based model gates most tools behind Pro, limiting free users and potentially driving up costs.
  • Occasional reliability/UI bugs that affect workflow.

I love this app because it shows the angle of incidence where the light is reflected. There are a few improvements I would love to see in this app that should be a part of the free portion of this app. 1. The ray should change color each time it is reflected off an object. 2. Add the ability to isolate reflected rays (1st bounce, 2nd bounce, etc.) 3. Add non-reflective surfaces. That’s everything I can think of at the moment.

As a retired EE interested in beam shaping of diode lasers I can’t justify subscribing to commercial optics design software- Ray Lab has been a respectable substitute. Thanks Kumar for developing it.

Ray tracing software is so essential yet so unbelievably expensive on PC OS that its a joke… This app does what $1000 software from a bigger name company does for just $100. Only wish I could use my PCs processor to run it. Fantastic overall. A buggy at times but as IPad and mobile devices get more powerful I’ve noticed better results.
