Photograph a grain sample, let the app count it, and work out the thousand grain weight and the seed rate from it. Everything runs on the device.

WinTec Grain Counter counts and measures grains from a photograph, keeps the sample and works out the thousand grain weight and the seed rate from it. Spread the sample, photograph it, read off the result. The analysis runs entirely on the device - no internet connection, no account, no advertising.

How it works

1. Spread the grain sample out in a single layer on a contrasting surface.
2. Photograph it from directly above, or choose an existing image.
3. Read off the count, the metrics and the per-grain data.

No sample to hand? Tap "Try with a sample image". A sample image is built in, so the analysis can be seen straight away.

The result

• Number of grains counted
• Overlay: every detected contour is drawn into the image
• Mean and median grain area
• Share of the image covered by the sample
• Number of grains separated out where they were touching
• Processing time and image size
• Per grain: position, size, area, major and minor axis, circularity, and the notes "separated" and "at the edge"
• Share the overlay image, for instance to document a sample

Saving samples

• Store an analysis under a name: overlay image, count, metrics and per-grain data are all kept
• The time and the coordinates are included if location access is allowed
• Reopen, rename and delete saved samples from the list
• Tap the overlay to check it full screen, with zoom
• Everything stays in a database on the device

Thousand grain weight

• The count from a saved sample, the mass from the scale - the app works out the thousand grain weight
• Optionally converted to a reference moisture so that samples stay comparable
• The weighing stays with the sample and appears in the list
• If the count is not reliable according to the analysis, no value is given. If grains cut off at the edge were discarded, the app says so: they are missing from the count but still lie on the scale

Seed rate

• The seed rate in kg/ha from thousand grain weight, target stand, germination and field emergence
• Together with the number of grains to sow per square metre

Adapting the detection to the sample

• Separate touching grains, which can be switched on and off
• Separation sensitivity from 0.5 to 5 px: a smaller value separates more, a larger one leaves clumps together
• Threshold correction from -40 to +40 against the automatically determined value
• Brightness of grain and background: detect automatically, light grains on a dark background or dark on light
• Discard grains cut off at the edge of the frame
• Analyse the same photograph again with changed settings

A method you can follow The detection uses classical image processing: an automatically determined Otsu threshold separates grain from background, connected components find the individual grains, an exact Euclidean distance transform separates touching grains, and contour tracing and shape analysis produce the metrics. The diagnostics view shows the threshold used and the number of rejected candidates. No cloud service and no trained model whose decision stays in the dark - every counted contour is visible in the overlay and can be checked.

Privacy The images do not leave the device. No usage data is collected and no sign-in is required. The app needs access to the camera or the image picker to obtain a photograph; the image is processed locally only. The location is asked for when a sample is saved and is written to the database on the device; the app works without it.

For reliable results Even light without hard shadows, a background that contrasts with the grain, and a sample spread out in a single layer. The separation helps with grains that touch, not with stacked ones: heavily overlapping layers cannot be resolved reliably by any image analysis. The result depends on the quality of the photograph and does not replace a calibrated measurement where a count has to be legally binding.
