Vietling teaches you Vietnamese vocabulary and then makes sure you keep it.

Every word is chosen by how often it actually turns up in speech, so the first hundred you learn do far more work than the next thousand. There are 1,220 of them, each with an example sentence, and they are spoken aloud by a studio voice model rather than read out by your phone's built-in text-to-speech.

Hear it before you learn it

Vietnamese has six tones, and a word said in the wrong one is a different word. Short video lessons cover the alphabet, the six tones, consonant clusters and vowels, each followed by a quiz, so you know what you are listening for before the words start arriving.

Two ways to study

Learn introduces new words. You meet the word, pick it out of four, then place it into a real sentence with a gap in it. Nothing is marked correct until you have actually produced it.

Review is the quiet one. Spaced repetition brings back exactly the words that are about to slip, on the day they are about to slip, and nothing else. Short sessions, no games, no noise. Come back after a few days away and a few easier cards come first, rather than a wall of everything you have forgotten.

Built for Southern Vietnamese

The vocabulary is the Southern one — dạ, hẻm, nha, heo — the words you will hear in Saigon and the Mekong Delta rather than the textbook Northern forms.

Vietnamese has no age-neutral word for "you", so Vietling asks your age once and teaches you the kinship terms that actually apply to you: what you call a waiter, what a waiter calls you, and what changes when the person is older.

A pet, a league, and people to race

Every review feeds a pet that grows as you do — pick from eight, from a chick to a dragon. Each week you are placed in a league with other learners at your level; reach the week's target and you climb a tier. Add friends with a code, or send a request to learners the app suggests. The streak is honest about being broken.

Reminders that learn your routine

Pick a time during setup. Once Vietling has seen when you actually study, it moves the nudge to just before then — and never sends one on a day you have already studied.

Light or dark

There is a proper dark theme in Settings. Nothing switches on its own and nothing nags you about it; it is a switch, and the app remembers which way you left it.

Your data

Your progress is backed up to an account the app makes for you, with no email or password needed. Other learners see your display name, profile picture, pet and weekly XP — nothing else. There are no adverts and no analytics. Delete the account from inside the app at any time, and it stays deleted.

Studying works offline

The deck, the sentences and all of your progress live on the phone, so a session with no signal works exactly as it does at home. Audio is fetched the first time you hear a word and then kept, so words you have already met stay audible offline too, and anything you study away from a connection catches up when you are back online.
