■ Play solo Three difficulty levels. "Hard" searches ten moves ahead and will almost certainly beat you. "Easy" is tuned so a beginner can win — but it still blocks your threats.

■ Play with a friend on one device Pass the phone back and forth. No network, no waiting for an opponent — it works on a plane.

■ Play with a friend who isn't with you Create a six-character passphrase and send it to them. When they type it in, the two of you are matched. No sign-up. Passphrases are never listed publicly, so a stranger cannot wander into your game.

■ Play the world You are matched automatically with someone who picked the same board size. No sign-up. Their moves appear on your screen instantly.
