HOW IT WORKS As you master a word, it comes back less and less often, and if you forget it, it comes back sooner: that's how spaced repetition works. The questions adapt to your level on each word: you start with multiple choice, move on to fill-in-the-blank, then type the word with no help. If you get it wrong, the question gets easier again. By default, the app gives you the most frequent words first, then rarer and rarer ones. You can also pick one of 16 topics, such as food or travel, to discover the words that go with it, and add any word you find in the word list to your reviews.

WHY FREQUENT WORDS FIRST The first thousand words of a language cover more than 80% of everyday vocabulary, the next thousand about a tenth, and the thousand after that a few percent. Even those, if you don't know them, can get in the way of a conversation. So Lernanto picked over 3,000 of the most frequent nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs in each language: the words that come up most in everyday conversation.

FREE WORDS, THEN A ONE-TIME PURCHASE In each language, 100 words are free. To go further and get the most out of the app, there's no subscription: you buy a language once and for all. You can also buy two-language bundles, or access to every language.

WHAT LERNANTO DOESN'T DO Lernanto isn't a dictionary. It doesn't teach grammar or conjugation, and set phrases aren't included. It isn't enough on its own to become fluent either. For that, you also need lessons and time spent listening and reading in the language.

READING AND LISTENING SUGGESTIONS Every now and then, a session ends with a short note about the language or its culture, with a movie, a book, a show or a podcast to check out.

NO DATA COLLECTED Lernanto doesn't ask for an account, doesn't show ads and collects nothing, not even usage statistics. Your progress stays on your phone and only leaves it if you export a backup yourself.
