Most apps have you tapping words into a box. Bolo! listens. You say the phrase, it hears you, and it tells you how close you got. So the first time you order kopi or ask for the bill, you have already said it out loud a hundred times.

THE JOURNEY

Follow the old Nanyang sea route, one water for each language. Six zones, ten stops in each, from a lantern-strung jetty at dawn to a festival harbour at night. Every stop is a small set of phrases you will actually use.
