Drive: G-Force + Telemetry

Drive turns the phone in your pocket into a telemetry logger for the days you actually care about driving.

Mount it on the dash before you set off. Drive reads the sensors already inside your iPhone — the accelerometer, the gyroscope, the barometer and GPS — and records what the car did. Then you park, and you read it back.

THE GAUGE

A live friction circle shows the forces on the car: braking up, throttle down, cornering left and right. The border is one g. A blue trail follows about the last two seconds and drains behind you, so the shape of a corner stays visible after you have driven out of it. Peak markers hold the hardest moments of the session.

Your speed sits alongside it, with the outside temperature.

RECORD THE RUN

Press record and Drive keeps the whole drive: the route as a GPS trace, a pin everywhere you cornered hardest, another wherever each straight peaked, and the stats that go with them. Everything lands in a session history you can page back through afterwards — one card per drive, each with its own map.

READ IT BACK

This is the part that matters. A g-force gauge on its own is a toy. What makes a drive worth reviewing is the corner you took best next to the one you did not, the brake you left too late, and the line you actually took rather than the one you remember.

PLATE READERS, ON THE MAP

Automatic licence-plate readers have gone up on most main roads. Drive shows the ones the OpenStreetMap community has mapped: a marker for every camera near you, and a heads-up as you approach one, with the distance and which way the lens faces. The list is built into the app, so nothing about your drive leaves your phone to look a camera up. It is community-mapped and incomplete — no alert does not mean no camera. Drive is a privacy tool, not a law-evasion tool; you are responsible for how you use it.

The live gauge, your speed and the outside temperature are free, and stay free.

Pro unlocks the four stat cards — turns, corner speed, elevation and grade, and distance with your session clock — plus the map view with its plate-reader markers and heads-up, and the session history. Buy it once, or subscribe by the year or the month; the one-time price is the honest one.

BUILT FOR THE PASSENGER SEAT AND THE PADDOCK

Drive is set up before you move and read after you stop. It is for track days, autocross, a morning on a road you love, and the passenger who wants to know what the car is doing. It is not a driving aid, and nothing in it should be operated while you are driving. Drive asks you to confirm that every single time it opens.

PRIVACY

No account. No sign-in. No ads. Your drives and session history stay on your phone — never uploaded, no server holding them.

Drive uses your location for speed, distance, the map and the plate-reader heads-up, which is worked out on the phone against a list built into the app. It sends your coordinates to a weather service to fetch the outside temperature. It collects anonymous, aggregate usage analytics to work out which features are worth keeping. There is no advertising identifier and no cross-app tracking.

UNITS FOLLOW YOUR REGION

Speed, temperature and elevation each follow your region independently, because the world does not split neatly into metric and imperial — Britain drives in miles but reads Celsius.

REQUIREMENTS

iPhone with iOS 17 or later. Drive needs location and motion access to do anything; both are requested on first open, and the app says why before it asks. A windscreen or vent mount is recommended — this app is meant to be looked at when the car is stopped.
