1.1 million of London's public trees, mapped. Find what is growing on your street, point a camera at one to identify it, or go next to it to have a chat.

In the gardens on the Embankment there is a London plane of about 35 metres. Fewer than three hundred trees in the city are recorded that high, and every one of them is in this app. So are 1.1 million more.

Find the ones near you on a map. Tap one for its name, its height, its age, how rare it is in London, the birds recorded nearby, and where its shade falls this afternoon.

Everything is stored on your phone and works with no signal.

Point the camera at a tree and the app works out which one it is, from where you are standing, the direction you are facing, and what the lens can see. That happens on the phone. No photo and no location leaves it.

Talk to a tree and it answers as itself, from its species, age, size, borough and the weather where it stands. A plane on the Embankment and a young rowan in Barking answer differently.

WHAT YOU CAN DO · See the trees near you, on a map or as a list, filtered by species or by how rare they are. · Identify a tree with the camera. · Get walking directions to one. · Have a conversation with it. Three chats are free. · Add a tree that is missing. Photograph it, say what you think it is, and a person checks it before it goes on the map.

TALKING TO A TREE You need to be within 50 metres of a tree to start a conversation. Once it has started you can carry it on from anywhere.

WHAT IT COSTS The map, the list, the camera, species pages, weather, sun and shade, and any conversation you have already had are free.

Message packs and a monthly subscription, with the prices shown before anything is bought. Packs do not expire.

The subscription is Open Garden, at £3.99 a month, and £1.99 for the first month. Trees speak their answers, you can call them, and any tree in London will reply, whether or not you are standing under it.

Payment is taken by your Apple ID when the purchase is confirmed. It renews for another month unless it is cancelled at least 24 hours before the current month ends, and it can be managed or cancelled in your Apple ID settings.

PRIVACY Finding the trees near you is a lookup inside the app and sends nothing. Camera recognition runs on the phone. Other parts of the app do send data, and ldn.garden/privacy lists all of it.
