Amblet: Walk and Collect

Amblet is a collecting game you play by going outside.

Every 2,500 steps turns up an egg. Shake it open and somebody comes out: one of 110 creatures, each drawn from its own seed, so no two are ever quite alike. Give it a name. Put it on your island. Go for another walk.

YOUR ISLAND They wander around it while you are gone. They nap. They get hungry about once a day, and a crumb, a berry or a bloom sorts that out. Sweep the dirt they tread in. Stroke one and it leans into your finger. There is no timer here you have to beat and nothing that rots if you skip a day.

110 TO FIND Ten silhouettes — round, organic, boxy, capsule, nub, cloud, droplet, hexagon, sun, triangle — and a hundred and ten species across them, each with a colour and a name of its own. The dex fills as you find them. Fill it completely and everything that hatches afterwards arrives changed.

THE ARENA Three of yours against three of somebody else's, turn by turn. Theirs always lands. Yours has to be earned: a shape comes up, you draw it, and how well you draw it decides whether it lands hard, lands soft, or whistles past. Three fights and a fighter needs twelve hours' sleep — so the team you take out this morning is a different team tonight.

STAND ONE IN THE ROOM WITH YOU Point the camera at the floor and put an Amblet on it at proper size, breathing and blinking, and take its photo.

QUIET ON PURPOSE Four notifications exist and there are none besides: an egg you walked up, a treat you turned up, one of them getting hungry, your team waking. No streaks. No "we miss you." No leaderboard to fall down. Any of the four can be turned off, and the app never sends anything else.

KEPT IN ICLOUD Sign in with Apple and your island outlives the phone it was made on.

SUBSCRIPTION Amblet is a subscription. A yearly plan starts with a 3-day free trial; a monthly plan is also available. Prices are shown in the app before you buy and are charged to your Apple Account at confirmation. It renews automatically unless you turn renewal off at least 24 hours before the period ends, and you can manage or cancel it any time in your Apple Account settings.

Amblet reads your step count from Health so that walking turns up eggs. It is never used for anything else, never leaves your device except in your own private iCloud, and is never used for advertising.
