WHY I CREATED MATCHWORDS

I built MatchWords because it's the Japanese learning app I wanted for myself.

While learning languages, I became frustrated with spending practice time on words I already knew, words I was unlikely to use, and vocabulary I simply wasn't interested in learning yet.

I wanted to choose exactly which words I was working on.

I loved simple word-matching exercises, but I wanted to hear every word as I matched it. I wanted flashcards that let me quickly separate the words I'd mastered from the ones that still needed work.

And sometimes I didn't want to actively study at all.

When I was learning Spanish, I'd leave vocabulary videos playing in the background for hours so I could keep hearing words throughout the day.

I loved learning this way, but there were two things I couldn't control: I couldn't choose exactly which words were being repeated, and adverts kept interrupting the listening.

So I built the experience I wanted into MatchWords.

Choose the words you want to learn. Match them. Hear them. Swipe through them. Save favourites. Build your own packs. Or simply press play and let your chosen vocabulary repeat while you relax, work, watch TV or get on with your day.

MATCH WORDS

Make Japanese vocabulary practice feel like a game.

Match Japanese words with their English meanings in a fast, satisfying matching game. Turn sound on and hear Japanese words as you play, helping you connect what you see with how it sounds.

LEARN WORDS

Turn the words you want to remember into focused Japanese flashcard practice.

Got it? Swipe right. Still learning? Swipe left.

Quickly separate familiar vocabulary from the words that need more attention, so you can spend less time repeating what you already know and more time mastering what you don't.

PLAY WORDS

Learn without studying.

Choose your vocabulary, press play and let MatchWords cycle through your selected words. Use it for extra Japanese listening and vocabulary exposure while you relax, work, watch TV or go about your day.

No adverts interrupting your listening. And because you choose the words, you're listening to vocabulary you actually want to learn.

CHOOSE EXACTLY WHAT YOU LEARN

Your learning time is valuable. Don't waste it repeatedly practising words you've already mastered, or vocabulary you have no interest in learning.

Select individual words and build your practice around the Japanese vocabulary that matters to you.
