Remap: Location Reminders

You get home from the store and go, "Ah — I forgot."

You knew you were out of laundry soap this morning. Inside the store, it never once crossed your mind. Your memory isn't the problem. That thought belonged to a place, not to a time.

Remap ties your to-dos to places instead of clock times. Write "laundry soap at the store" once, and the next time you're near, Remap tells you.

■ A nudge when you get close

Grocery store, pharmacy, post office, dry cleaner — any place works. Come near it and a notification arrives with the place name and one line: "You're close by." Tap it to see what to pick up.

■ Write it down, the place remembers

Write the to-do, attach one place, and you're done. After that you're allowed to forget. Remembering is the place's job now.

■ Check it off when you walk in

Tap the notification and your list is there. Check things off one by one, then hit "Got it all." That place's nudges end there. Turn on Repeat and it comes back the next time you visit.

■ Fine with the app closed

You don't have to keep Remap running. Quit it completely — when you get near the place, it wakes up on its own and tells you.

■ Nothing to set up

Your iPhone can do something like this on its own. It just takes so many taps that most people try it once and never again. Remap has no toggles to flip and no screen for drawing zones on a map. Write it down, and the app handles the rest.

■ Why location has to be "Always"

To notice that you've arrived while you're out, the app has to be able to check location even when it isn't open. That is what "Always" is for. Location is used only to send you a notification, and no record of where you have been is kept.
