Game Outside turns a walk in the park into a game your kids actually want to play. Pick where you are, choose how long you want to play, and draw one challenge at a time. Nobody knows what is on the card until you flip it.

Find something older than your grandmother. Guess how many steps it takes to reach that tree, then count them out loud. Get a photo of everybody at the farm. A grown-up decides if it counts, and sneaky answers count too.

FEATURED LOCATIONS Some parks come with challenges written for that exact place, based on what is really there. Each one opens with a bit of the place's history to read out to the kids before you start. Not near one? Play Anywhere builds a deck for wherever you are, whether that is a trail, a backyard, or the long way home.

BEFORE YOU GO Every featured place tells you what you need before you get in the car: where to park and what it costs, how long to set aside, what the walking is like, whether a stroller works, and whether there are bathrooms. Tap Get directions and your maps app opens pointed at the parking lot, not the middle of the park.

DETOURS Every so often a card turns up that is not a challenge at all. Three hundred steps before you can draw again. Get there without once walking in a straight line. The slowest person goes in front and sets the pace. Do it, and the next card is yours.

FINISH A PLACE, EARN A CREST Each featured place holds more challenges than one visit can use, so a place is something you come back to and finish. Find every challenge there and the place is yours, with a crest to show for it. Finish every place in a region and you are Explorers of the whole area. It works with a four-year-old too: you are measured against the cards your family can actually play, never against a number you could never reach.

BUILT FOR ACTUALLY BEING OUTSIDE

• Works with no signal. The whole game is on your phone.
• Big type and big buttons, readable in bright sun and usable one-handed while walking.
• Tell it how old your kids are and the deck adjusts, so the youngest is never stuck on a card they cannot do.
• A quick adventure is seven cards. A full one is fifteen.
• Stuck on a card? You get a couple of skips. A card that does not work at your park can be thrown out, and it will not count against you.
• Take photos as you go and look back at the whole adventure afterwards.
