User Reviews

Reviews are largely nostalgic and positive about the classic gameplay, but the shift to a subscription model is the dominant complaint. Players dislike monthly fees, ads, and the lack of new content, feeling their past purchases are devalued. Many would prefer a one-time purchase to recapture the original experience.
Pros
  • Nostalgia: many reviewers say Colossatron was a childhood favorite and are fond of it.
  • Simple, accessible gameplay with enough challenge to stay engaging.
  • A one-time purchase option would be preferable; players express willingness to pay upfront rather than ongoing subscriptions.
Cons
  • The game is now locked behind a monthly subscription to play the full game.
  • Ads are pervasive or intrusive, detracting from the experience.
  • There have been no significant content updates or new features for years.
  • Some players feel they lost access to content they had purchased previously when it switched to a subscription model.
  • Perceived corporate greed driving the change.

This is one of the worst monetization decisions I’ve ever seen in mobile gaming. Halfbrick built its reputation on fun, simple, highly polished games like Fruit Ninja, Jetpack Joyride, and Colossatron. These were games that millions of people grew up playing. They were either free with ads or available as inexpensive one-time purchases. That model was fair, accessible, and made sense. Now, many of these older games are locked behind a subscription service. The biggest problem is that this subscription does not offer enough value to justify a recurring fee. Services like Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Plus, and Ubisoft+ provide access to hundreds of modern games, online features, and constant new releases. Halfbrick+ is asking players to pay every month for a relatively small catalog of mostly older mobile games. Many players would gladly accept one of these alternatives: Free with ads A one-time purchase to unlock the full game An optional subscription for people who want access to the entire catalog Instead, the only option for some titles is to subscribe. That is why this decision feels less like a customer-focused business model and more like a cash grab. There is nothing inherently wrong with a company making money. Developers deserve to be paid, and successful studios need revenue to continue operating. The issue is when a pricing model appears designed to maximize recurring payments while offering limited additional value to the customer. Locking classic games behind a monthly fee creates the impression that the company is prioritizing predictable subscription revenue over consumer choice and long-term goodwill. That feels especially frustrating for longtime fans who remember playing these games years ago. Nostalgia should not be turned into a monthly bill. The negative reviews on the App Store suggest that many players feel the same way. People are not upset because they expect games to be free forever. They are upset because there were much more consumer-friendly ways to monetize these games. A simple one-time purchase option would likely have been far better received. Many fans would happily pay a few dollars to permanently own Colossatron or other classic titles. Halfbrick made some of the best mobile games of their era, but this pricing model undermines the goodwill they built over many years. A better approach would be: Free versions with ads One-time purchase options Halfbrick+ as an optional subscription, not the only way to play That model would still generate revenue while giving players flexibility and preserving trust. Until then, I can’t recommend paying a monthly subscription to access games that were once free or inexpensive and are now locked behind a recurring fee.

Ugh, this was my favorite game, still is, but Halfbrick decided that they need money I dont have. Like, make it a pay once and you’re done thing, they even had ads in it!!! Just keep the damn ads, they were spaced far enough apart I didn’t mind it, but a subscription??? Come on!! I’m a teenager for Colossatron’s sake, I don’t have money!!!
