Firewood Stock answers one question. Will what is in the yard actually get you through the winter?

LOG WHAT YOU HAVE, BY STACK Species, cords, and the month it was stacked. Each stack shows whether it is ready to burn or still seasoning, worked out from when you put it up and how long that species takes.

ONLY SEASONED WOOD COUNTS This is the part that catches people. Two cords of oak stacked last autumn are not two cords you can burn this winter, and an app that counts them is telling you what you want to hear rather than what is true. The total at the top only includes wood that is actually ready.

WHAT THE WINTER NEEDS Stove output, hours burning a day, weeks of season. That gives you a heat figure, and the app converts it into cords for each species. Three cords of oak or six and a half of poplar covers the same winter, which is why a load of cheap softwood is sometimes not cheap at all.

EIGHT SPECIES, WITH HEAT AND DRYING TIME Oak, ash, maple, beech, birch, hickory, pine and poplar, each with its heat per cord and how long it needs. Heat and drying time are related, and the woods that give the most heat are the ones that take longest to dry.
