That is the whole idea, and it is why hearUP works when simply turning the volume up does not. Sound fades fast with distance, so a microphone sitting on the coffee table hears the room far better than one at the far end of the sofa. hearUP puts the phone's microphone where the conversation is and sends it straight to your ears.

HOW PEOPLE ACTUALLY USE IT

Family are talking across the living room and you are in your chair. Put the phone on the table between them, put your earbuds in, and join in.

At a restaurant it goes in the middle of the table; in the car, on the dashboard; at a talk, on the desk in front of you. Wired earphones work, and so do AirPods and any Bluetooth earbuds.

WHY IT DOES NOT HOWL

Amplifier apps usually squeal, because the microphone and the speaker are the same phone an arm's length away. Here the phone is across the room from your ears, so there is nothing to feed back. It also keeps working with the screen locked.

BUILT TO PROTECT YOUR HEARING

Amplified sound in earbuds can damage hearing, so these are not optional extras:

• A limiter is always in the chain and cannot be switched off. A door slamming, a siren, a dropped plate - all clamped rather than amplified into your ears.
• Earbuds or headphones are required. hearUP will not amplify to the phone's own speaker. If you disconnect mid-session, listening stops by itself.
• A phone call or another app taking the audio stops the session rather than leaving it half-running.

Start low, raise it only until speech is comfortable, and take breaks. If it feels uncomfortable, it is already too loud.

WHAT THIS IS NOT

hearUP is a sound amplifier. It is not a hearing aid and not a medical device. It does not diagnose, treat or correct hearing loss, and it is not a substitute for professional care.

If you have trouble hearing day to day, or you have ringing, pain, or a sudden change in your hearing, please see a doctor or an audiologist. A hearing aid is fitted to your hearing by a professional; an app amplifying a phone microphone is a different thing, however useful in the moment.

Please do not use hearUP while driving, cycling, or anywhere you need to hear traffic normally.

PRIVACY

Audio is processed live on your device and is never uploaded. Nothing is written to a file - the last 30 seconds used by the replay feature are held in memory only and are gone the moment you stop listening. There is no account and no analytics.

SUBSCRIPTION

hearUP Pro is $3.99 weekly with a 3-day free trial, or $17.99 yearly. Payment is charged to your Apple ID at confirmation of purchase. Subscriptions renew automatically unless auto-renew is turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Manage or cancel in your App Store account settings. Any unused portion of a free trial is forfeited when you buy a subscription.
