Every contract in Road Builder Empire gives you a route, soil survey, climate profile, traffic forecast and fixed capital budget, then asks one question: will this pavement still be intact in twenty years? BUILD THE ROAD Compact the subgrade. Lay separation fabric over soft clay to prevent it from mixing with the aggregate. Choose the sub-base and base course, specify binder and wearing-course mixes, and configure camber, ditch depth, culverts and shoulder width so water drains correctly. Then open the road to traffic and watch time advance. Every truck axle contributes to fatigue, water exposes drainage mistakes, summer heat can deform the surface, and winter frost affects poorly drained sections. FAILURE PROVIDES INFORMATION Cracks develop along stress lines. Potholes appear where the base is insufficient. Ruts deepen along wheel paths where the binder becomes too soft. Drill a core sample anywhere along the road to examine individual layers, moisture levels and possible causes of failure. Use this information to understand what happened and redesign the structure. Each region introduces new physical concepts, materials and equipment, allowing complexity to increase gradually as you progress. RUN YOUR OWN FIRM Between contracts, manage your construction company and compete for projects against five rival firms with different approaches. Hire and train specialists across six disciplines: surveying, earthworks, paving, drainage, quality control and plant operation. Crew skill influences how closely the finished road matches your original design. Purchase machines for your equipment yard, improve your asphalt plant and progress through a seventeen-node research tree. Unlock technologies and materials including geogrid, polymer-modified binders, stone mastic asphalt, foamed bitumen recycling and continuously reinforced concrete. FIELD HANDBOOK A built-in handbook contains ten chapters explaining road construction concepts in accessible language. Topics include structural number, axle damage, drainage, frost heave, reflective cracking, compaction and lifecycle costing. The handbook also contains reference information for twenty-two materials. Create your own site photo log by photographing real road defects, such as rutting or cracked surfaces. Add a defect tag and keep the image as a reference card in your personal handbook.
