Downhill Rush: Bike Racer

You are on a bike, at the top of a mountain, and the trail only goes one way.

Downhill Rush is a first-person endless descent through a hand-painted forest valley. No lanes, no rails, no auto-steer: hold anywhere on the screen and the bike goes where your thumb is. The trail bends, the whoops throw you into the air, and the speed never stops building.

REAL STEERING Most runners give you three lanes. This gives you the whole trail. Lean into a corner hard enough and the back end steps out into a drift, which costs you grip and buys you angle. Getting a fast line through a bend is a skill, not a swipe.

GET AIRBORNE The trail is built out of rolling whoops and kicker crests. Hit one flat out and you will clear thirty metres of trail and whatever was sitting on it. Steering barely works in the air, so commit before you leave the ground.

THE GRASS WON'T KILL YOU Run wide and you are on the bank, fighting for grip and threading between trunks with the camera shaking itself apart. It is survivable. It is rarely a good idea.

120 DESCENTS TO BEAT There is a whole mountain behind the endless run: 120 numbered descents over ten chapters, each one asking for a distance, a time, or simply that you last. Three stars on all of them is 360, and the last chapter does not hand them over.

TWELVE BIKES, NINETEEN RIDERS Every frame handles differently: top speed, acceleration, cornering, stability. Upgrade six stats on each one, and pick a rider whose passive suits how you ride.

CRATES AND PART CARDS Prime crates deal part cards for the bikes in your garage. Every drop rate is printed on the crate screen, before you open anything.

A NEW SEASON EVERY 28 DAYS Fifty tiers of rewards, earned by riding. The free track runs the whole way; the paid track is there if you want it, and neither of them expires early.

PAINTED, NOT RENDERED The whole game runs through a watercolour filter — soft washes, ink contours, paper grain. It looks like a moving illustration, and at 100 km/h it looks like one that is about to come apart.
