Everything you do during a round happens on your wrist. You never take your iPhone out of your pocket, and you never carry a separate stroke counter. The iPhone app is there to look back at rounds you have finished.

■ The screen stays on

A counter you cannot read is not a counter. Your round is recorded as a golf workout, so your stroke count stays on screen for the whole four or five hours. Lower your arm and the number is still there when you look again. No more opening the app from the watch face after every shot.

■ Works with gloves on, without looking

Tap anywhere on the screen to add a stroke. There is no small button to aim for, so it works with a glove on and while you are walking. A double tap of your fingers counts too, so you can keep hold of the club. Counting a stroke and moving to the next hole feel different, so you know the tap registered without looking down.

■ Counts hole by hole

The hole you are on is always visible. Move to the next hole and the count returns to zero as the hole number goes up. Moved on by mistake? Go back, and the strokes you counted on that hole come back with it. Nothing to recount.

■ Saved to Health

Rounds are saved to Health as golf workouts and count toward your Activity rings. The iPhone app lists the date, duration, holes played, and total strokes for every round. Swipe to delete any round you would rather not keep.

■ Pause at the turn

Stop the count while you break for lunch. Your workout duration matches what actually happened, and the battery lasts longer.

■ No data collected

No account. No server. No ads, no analytics. Your strokes and your rounds never leave your device and your iCloud.
