Two rikishi face each other on a clay dohyo — and stacked all around the rim is a ring of mahjong tiles. You charge a push by tapping as fast as you can, then let go to drive forward. Speed matters, but so does rhythm: taps that land on the beat build combo, and letting go inside the sweet zone of the meter turns a shove into a thunderclap. Hold too long and you slip in the sand.

The twist: your tiles cap your force Every clash starts with a fresh draw of five tiles and about seven seconds to pick three of them. That choice — not your thumb — decides what this push can be. Build a triplet and swing for the ring edge; build a sequence and let the mountain break on you instead. With no meld you push at plain strength, which against an Ozeki is a polite way of losing.

The Haku Ring The white ring around the dohyo defines the boundary. Pushing your opponent outside this line wins the bout. The ring itself is your ultimate target — a clean push out is the most decisive victory.

Reading your rival Above the ring you can see how many tiles the challenger holds — never which ones. A five-tile hand is a storm warning: he is close to a triplet and this is a bad moment to be caught at half charge. Each rival also has a signature charge rhythm. Wakashiba dumps everything into the tachi-ai and is empty after; Arashiyama peaks at the very last instant; the Yokozuna has no pattern at all. Learning those tells is the real progression in this game.
