QR CODES AND YOUR OWN PHOTOGRAPHS Put a scannable code on any message — a link, your Wi-Fi details or plain text — sized and placed where you want it, with the quiet zone always kept. Send a photograph from your iPhone or iPad to use as the background; an automatic scrim and a contrast check keep the words readable.

TIMERS, CLOCKS AND COUNTDOWNS Show the time or the date, count down to an hour, count up from now, or say "back in fifteen minutes". The time is part of the message, sized and positioned with it rather than pinned to a corner.

PLAYLISTS AND SCHEDULES A playlist shows each of its messages for as long as you set, then moves on — all evening, unattended. A schedule puts a message or a playlist on screen between the times you choose. Schedules run while MessageStage is open; tvOS does not let an app switch a television on or interrupt another app, and the app says so.

CONTROL IT FROM YOUR IPHONE With the free MessageStage Companion app, type on your phone and see it on the TV. Change looks and modes, pause, blank the screen, lock the display, send photographs and move messages as files. Pair with every Apple TV you own and send the same message to all of them at once, with an honest report of what happened on each.

A LIBRARY THAT STAYS MANAGEABLE Folders, tags, favourites and search. Saved looks capture a style you like, ready to apply to another message. Scene packages move messages between devices as a single file. Optional iCloud sync keeps several Apple TVs in step through your own private iCloud storage — off until you turn it on, and never required.

SCREEN CARE Screens dislike a bright, still image left on them for hours. Screen Care changes position, colour and brightness patterns over time to reduce how long any one part of the picture stays lit, and keeps track of which areas of the screen have been used most so it can favour the others. It cannot guarantee that image retention or burn-in will not occur, and it does not change your television's own settings.

PRIVATE BY DESIGN Your messages are stored on this Apple TV. There is no account to create, nothing is uploaded, and there are no third-party trackers, no advertising and no analytics. The app works with the network switched off.
