NEW TO THE ENVELOPE METHOD?

It's the oldest budgeting trick there is. At the start of the month you split your money into envelopes — Groceries, Gas, Dining out, Fun — and decide how much goes in each. When you spend, it comes out of the envelope it belongs to, and when an envelope is empty you're done spending on that thing until next month. Done with real cash it's called cash stuffing. Pouch is the same, minus the ATM run.

It's for you if you'd rather not hand an app your bank login, or you get paid on the 25th and a budget that resets on the 1st has never made sense.

HOW A MONTH GOES

• Add your accounts — bank, savings, cash in your wallet. You type the balances in yourself. • Make your envelopes and give each one a monthly budget. • Log an expense and pick the envelope it came out of. Left to spend this month updates on the spot. • Ran an envelope dry? Move money over from one with room to spare. • Switch on roll over and unspent money carries into next month — that's how a sinking fund grows. • At month end, a Recap shows what you spent and where it went.
