Shizuka is an ambient sound mixer where every scene is a place.

Open one and the place is there — a slow, illustrated evening — with up to six of its sounds on their own faders. Rain on the water. Reeds. Frogs. A koto, if you want one. Push the rain up and the frogs down until it sounds the way you want it. The app remembers, per place, for next time.

That is the difference between this and a rain playlist. A playlist hands you someone else's mix. This hands you the desk.

THIRTEEN PLACES A ridge above Kyoto at dusk. An onsen in the steam. A sleeper train with the blind up. A river gorge. A lilypond after moonrise. Dunes at sunset, a wheat field in the morning, pines with a fire going, a beach, the seafront at Nice, Sydney harbour, a Yellowstone meadow — and pure white, pink and brown noise for the nights you want nothing but the floor.

SLEEP Set 15, 30, 45 or 60 minutes, or any length you like. The sound eases away over the last two minutes rather than stopping dead. Playback carries on with the screen locked, and the lock screen shows where you are.

BUILT TO BE LEFT RUNNING Every layer loops at a different length, so the combination you hear tonight does not come round again. Nothing cycles the way a single recording does.

QUIET BY DESIGN No account. No sign-in. No ads, ever. No streaks, no notifications, nothing to read. Once a place is on your phone it plays offline.

Payment is charged to your Apple Account on confirmation.
