AIR TEMPERATURE LIES On a pleasant 77°F sunny day, asphalt reaches about 125°F — hot enough to damage paw pads in about a minute. In winter it lies the other way: on a clear, still night the pavement can freeze while the thermometer still reads 35°F. Paws (scorching asphalt, ice, road salt) and body (heatstroke, wind chill) are judged separately, and the worse one wins.

JUDGED FOR YOUR DOG Flat-faced breeds, puppies, seniors and dark coats get stricter heat verdicts; small dogs and short coats get stricter cold ones. It follows published veterinary guidance.
