MedAlarm: Pill & Med Reminder

Tap “Taken” on the reminder and the dose is logged — no need to open the app. See today’s doses on the widget. Free to use, no account, and records stay on your phone.

MedAlarm is a straightforward medication reminder. It tells you when a dose is due and lets you record whether you took it, right there.

Setting up a medication takes a name and a time. There is no account to create.

■ Record the dose from the notification

A notification arrives when a dose is due. Press "Mark as taken" or "Skip" on the notification itself and the record is kept — no need to open the app. If you cannot deal with it right then, snooze it.

MedAlarm can also remind you again automatically when a notification goes unanswered. The snooze and follow-up intervals are yours to set.

A dose you have already recorded will not be announced again that day. Take something early and nothing goes off later to confuse you.

■ Home screen widget

Put the widget on your home screen or lock screen to see what is left for today without opening the app. Tap a dose on the widget to mark it as taken.

If you would rather not have medication names visible to whoever glances at your phone, the widget can hide them.

■ Schedules that match the prescription

The cycle option covers courses written as "21 days on, 7 days off" — oral contraceptives, steroid tapers, chemotherapy cycles.

Set a start and end date and the reminders stop when the course does. For a medication you are not taking at the moment, pause it instead of deleting it; the record stays.

■ Look back over the record

The calendar shows which doses were taken, skipped or missed, day by day.

Each medication can carry a photo and a note — useful for telling similar tablets apart, or for keeping "one tablet, after food" somewhere you will see it.

■ Privacy

Your records, medication names and photos are kept on your device. They are not sent anywhere.

Anonymous usage and crash information is sent to help fix problems. You can turn that off in Settings at any time.

■ Premium (auto-renewing subscription)

Choose the period and the PDF is generated for it; from the share menu you can email, save or print it. It is meant for showing to a doctor or pharmacist at an appointment.

Monthly and yearly plans are available. The subscription renews automatically until cancelled, and you can cancel from Settings > Apple Account > Subscriptions on your iPhone.

Reminders, records, the widget and the calendar are all free. Premium is not needed for any of them.
